Jewell-Porter Book Scholarship

"When you've worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. No, you reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed."
-Michelle Obama

Pictured right is Cierra Carter, the first ever Jewell-Porter Book Scholarship recipient for 2016. Cierra graduated with a 3.7 GPA from the Nursing Program. She is CPR certified and also tested for her CNA credentials. Ms. Carter was also a member of the National Honors Society. Congratulations Cierra and we are very proud of you! Best of blessings as you embark on your new journey at Northern Kentucky University.

The Jewell Porter Book Scholarship was created by Central Alumni, Lanisha Porter and Jason Jewell who graduated from the Law Program in 2013. This book scholarship fund of $500 is intended to aid the book costs of a graduating Central High School senior, who has enrolled in college. Both Jason and Lanisha wanted to choose a student who demonstrated stellar academic performance, community involvement, and holistic character traits that may have not been reflective in their standardized tests scores. While $500 can seem like only a drop in the bucket considering the cost of tuition, we hoped this would alleviate some of the financial pressures present during the transition from high school to college. The scholarship board chooses one candidate to award each year but hopes to award more students in the near future as funds become more available. Both Jewell and Porter personally sponsor this scholarship.

Eligibility to apply for the scholarship is as follows:
-Must attend Central High School as a graduating senior
-Proof of plans to complete post-secondary education
-Composite ACT score of 16
-Minimum of a cumulative 2.5 grade point average
-Submit 500 word essay
-Include a resume detailing description of high school activities participated in
-Letter of character recommendation
 **scholarship opens in the spring

“The Jewell-Porter Book Scholarship to me is the beginning of a lifetime of commitment and service to the community that built us. We cannot better for our kids and our generations if each of us aren’t willing to invest in them. As two seniors in college I think this scholarship should force everyone to ask: What more can I do to help someone?”—Jason Jewell
